Character Name: Saruhiko Fushimi
Canon: Project K
Canon Point: Episode 13, before the finale
Background/History: ( Bam! )
Personality:
Despite appearing on the very first episode of Project K, Fushimi’s true motivations don’t really come to light until about five episodes in. The use of “motivation” instead of “nature” is crucial when describing Fushimi -- for one, regardless of what it may seem like in Episode 5 (to be discussed later on), what we see of Fushimi is who he is, not a facade of boredom and general lack of interest to conceal the bloodthirsty, sociopath underneath the surface. But that isn’t to say that he hasn’t changed at all in his recent past; it’s evident that Fushimi had vastly developed some deep-seated hate from the time he was introduced into the world of the Clans, at least a year and a half before the start of the anime series.

The Fushimi we see now is cold, apathetic, and aloof. It’s unclear if he even enjoys his job and alliance with SCEPTER4 despite abandoning the Red Clan, HOMRA, for the current. All of his orders are usually met with a click of his tongue (a quirk of his, really) or an irritated sigh. He never seems close to any of the other members of SCEPTER4, always keeping his distance and preoccupied at the very least. A great example of this is how Fushimi has his own dorm room despite the fact that every member of SCEPTER4 were usually paired off on twos. Because he's favored by the Blue King, Munakata Reisi, he requested to have a room all by himself because the thought of waking up with a stranger every day “makes him sick to his stomach.” Unlike the family-like bonds that those of HOMRA manages to create, Fushimi treats his life at SCEPTER4 as if it’s a long, insufferable career that he’s ultimately stuck with for the time being. Although he shows little to no enthusiasm for the Blue Clan, Fushimi always does his job quickly and efficiently. He may never see any merit in his job, but at the end of the day, the job is always done and done well if he can help it.

But perhaps he sometimes is too impatient with his work. While Awashima and Munakata, his Lieutenant and Captain respectively, have a more professional approach to business, Fushimi pushes his boundaries as far as his individual right as their subordinate (and employee) would allow him -- that ensures that he won’t get into anymore trouble than a mere verbal, though informal, warning, though he would rather avoid that if possible. As result, Fushimi’s approach to his duties may be too hastily executed and/or cruel. For example, in Episode 5, Awashima, Fushimi and a couple other Blues had gone to Ashinaka High School on an island to find out whether or not the suspect in the case of the death of Totsuka Tatara is a student there. Fushimi stood near his Lieutenant as she spoke to the school principal, urging them to release the school files to confirm their hunch. Of course, regardless of SCEPTER4’s status as a special police force, the principal went on his roundabout way of saying he couldn’t do such a thing while Awashima explained the sensitivity of the issue. There was only so much Fushimi could stand before he wordlessly excused himself and decided to access the school files his way. It’s established from both the light novels and some hints throughout the series that Fushimi is an apt hacker, and he’s certainly smart enough to. Due to his impatience, he actually used a chloroform napkin in one of the student council members in order to use her fingerprints to access the student database, knowing that Awashima was getting absolutely nowhere with her negotiations.

As undesirable that trait is, it does show that Fushimi does have some semblance of leadership. He steps in when he feels it’s necessary regardless of his reservations about the organization, and he does care about the safety of his comrades (perhaps on a very shallow level; it saves him trouble in the future). He demonstrates this by jumping in to save Awashima from what would have been a fatal Aura blast from Suoh when he clearly didn’t have to concern himself with that, and does so another time when Yata Misaki had charged for her. As a leader, Fushimi shows that his position, though not exclusively stated but suggested to be higher than just a regular clansman, is well-deserved. He can quickly come up with the best route and strategies in order to subjugate the suspect. Fushimi knows that he has responsibilities, and in order to achieve his rather mysterious goals and aspirations (whatever it is, it has not been clearly stated), he has to keep moving forward.

Ironic, that -- for reasons that will be revealed later.

But to understand his current mindset, we must rewind time and look back at the boy he used to be, before he entered the world of Clans and Kings. We only get small glimpses of Fushimi’s person and small details through conversations with Yata Misaki. One thing is clear, however -- during these times, Yata is the most important figure in his life. Whether or not he has a family to care after him still a mystery, as well; we see him and Yata in their school uniforms in the streets without little aim for the future. It’s strongly suggested that he developed a strong sense of dependency on Yata because he had no one else to. In his lunch hours, he relies on his best friend to eat his vegetables because he “hates all vegetables”, and in exchange, he would drink Yata’s much hated milk. There’s a side story (canon, mind) that summarizes their relationship in a small, short story pretty well. In it, Fushimi and Yata are are seen discussing about their future as the lie aimlessly in their drab world as middle school students. They talked about ruling the world, which seems like a childish dream, with Yata suggesting that they should take control of machines and taking over the world with them. Fushimi thought he was an idiot for it and that was the end of their conversation, but Fushimi seriously began devising a way to make that dream reality. This shows exactly how much he’d cared for the silly, immature things that they’d come up in the past, and had honestly thought that this world of theirs had consisted only the two of them. Their contrast is what had brought them together. Unlike Yata, Fushimi appears timid at best. When they’d met the leader of HOMRA the first time, it was only Yata who’d spoken up for them, which sheds some light in what their relationship must have been like all along. What he’s used to.

All of that of course changes once they accepted Kusanagi’s invitation to join HOMRA, enticing them with the idea that they will have a place to “blow off some steam.” Because of Fushimi’s nature at the time (timid, possibly soft-spoken), it’s likely that, without anywhere else to go and the inability to break his emotional dependency on Yata, he’d blindly followed him to HOMRA. Their relationship starts to sour thereon; little by little, Fushimi began to isolate himself from the rest of the group, and there’s only one reason why: he’s a jealous, immature and dependent boy at the core. You see, he couldn’t stand the sight of Yata forming bonds with others so quickly when they had only eachother at first -- Yata became so prideful and emotionally invested in HOMRA that he unintentionally pushed Fushimi to the side in the process, which greatly lead to a lot of pent up anger within him. Eventually, it ends in “betrayal” of the Red Clan for SCEPTER4, the Blue Clan.

“Can you blame me? In the end, I wasn’t like you and the others. Leaving was inevitable.”
-- Fushimi Saruhiko, Episode 5

This, to say the least, is the “condensed” and admittedly shallow explanation of his departure. Fushimi says this at least one year after his leave just as he coincidentally runs into Yata at the school in which his team is investigating, but what does he mean by that, exactly? HOMRA is definitely more family-oriented than Fushimi ever cared for, but despite the fact that even Yata had even tried to reach out for him during his time in the Red Clan, he still always felt like he’s on the outside looking in, because he didn’t want to be a part of that family. At the time of his departure, he had more things to say about HOMRA:

“There goes your pride, Misaki. You asked why I betrayed you? Because it's stupid. We have special powers, but all we do is play punks and gangsters. I'm sick to the core of HOMRA.”
-- Fushimi Saruhiko, Episode 10 (flashback)

His harsh criticism the Red Clan is shallow because it’s evident that’s not the reason why he’d left. He shows no more enthusiasm with his current post as a member of SCEPTER4, the special police force working directly under the Prime Minister of the country, than he had with HOMRA, the so-called group of “punks and gangsters.” In fact, one can say that not much at all has changed with his mannerisms since he left, which brings back to what his intentions truly are, and why his idea of moving on and moving forward is ironic.

I reiterate on my use of “motivations” when describing Fushimi precisely because how much Yata means to him and how little Yata realizes that. Fushimi doesn’t know how to express just that and takes the immature route and leaves, giving his former best friend an illegitimate explanation in the process and expecting (well, not expecting) him to understand. His roundabout way of doing things only worsen their relationship until it’s absolutely no more; whenever they see eachother these days, it’s only to fight, and through that fighting, there must be a part of Fushimi that wishes that Yata would just open his eyes and understand him. At the same time, he feasts on the hatred that Yata has for him, because unfortunately, if it's not friendship that will be the bond between them, it would be hatred. In the following conversation, it seems that one thing is understood about Fushimi:

“The day you'll finally understand me... will never come. Which means you've no choice but continue hating me.”
“Saru... You know, I... have long since learned how to drink my milk. You're the only one still stuck being unable to eat vegetables. You ever think... that maybe you can eat them just fine, and it's just that you just don't want to be able to eat them? The only one of us who hasn't moved an inch from where he stood back then - the one who hasn't tried to move on - is you! Just you, Saruhiko.”

-- Fushimi Saruhiko and Yata Misaki, AGF 2012 Drama CD

And that’s really the ugly truth about him. It was mentioned before that during his HOMRA days, he was immature in his approach. Well, that still remains today. Just as he still refuses to eat his vegetables (and without no one else to eat it for him anymore), Fushimi is still immature and still very much a bitter ex-(girl)friend of Yata’s. That truth doesn’t truly come to light until he meets Yata again, but he does stalk him here and there. In fact, Episode 3 of the anime series had been dedicated to just that. Fushimi keeps close tabs on what Yata’s doing, eager to entice the boy to fight him. Because he is employed under the government and is on duty as long as he’s in uniform, Fushimi does still abide and work under his boundaries. All he does talk, and he knows exactly how to make Yata angry (mentioning their difference in height, calling him by his given name, Misaki, stepping on his pride as a member of the Red Clan and trashtalking Suoh Mikoto... always works). And once Yata takes the bait, Fushimi can engage in “emergency combat” as long as he’s uninterrupted (hint: it’s always interrupted).

It seems that during battles -- specifically battles with Yata -- is the only time Fushimi can truly, fully enjoy himself. He’s seen giggling and laughing in Episode 5 as he fights him, much different from the passive, disinterested individual we see within the first four episodes. Now there’s a single line he says that had the fandom convinced that he was a sociopath for a whole three episodes, and it isn’t until the end of the series that we can confirm that it is complete bullshit:

“Saru. Don’t get cocky because of those half-assed powers. Think you own the country now?”
“I’m not interested in something as crass as a country. What I’m interested in is... blood and flesh.”

-- Yata Misaki and Fushimi Saruhiko, Episode 5

The fact is, that isn’t truly how he feels. Despite what he said there, he never once committed bloodshed -- the closest he got to that was a throwing knife to Yata’s shoulder, which seems only like a flesh wound because it hadn’t taken him long to recover from it at all. He did beat some of the HOMRA members while attempting to track down Yata on his free time, but it they, too, recovered from that as well, as they returned to the Red Clan by the end of the series. This is only another one of Fushimi’s ways to let Yata know what he’s become, that he’s far better off than when he stayed with HOMRA. Unfortunately, nothing at all has changed. He feels he’d lost Yata the moment they’d joined HOMRA together, and perhaps he wanted Yata to feel the same -- what it means to lose something important. His burning jealousy comes to light when he sees Yata happily laughing with his HOMRA friends, and him watching from afar. He gets intensely irritated, telling him (though unheard) not to laugh (which also displays his other quirk; his scarred insignia occasionally gets itchy -- perhaps a subconscious thing -- when he thinks about Yata).

But there is still parts of him that cares for Yata. In the final episode of K, as they form a temporary alliance to fight Yatogami Kuroh, Yata’s insignia starts to hurt him. In spite of the fact that they’d just been fighting moment before, Fushimi still takes a moment to inspect the symbol, not as an opponent, but clearly as friend, and the fact that Yata had let him do that without a fight says something about what’s left of their relationship. Because Fushimi is someone who is literally stuck in the mindset of when he’d lost his friend to the members of HOMRA, it’s certainly in him that believes that their friendship can be repaired. In the same vein, as he is now, Fushimi won’t believe that they can be friends again unless Yata can understand that he is a person who cannot and will not learn the concept that a person (and friend) can be shared. There is no such thing as undivided attention when one has entered a clan like HOMRA.

That isn’t the only thing Fushimi was bitter about with HOMRA, however. At the end of the anime series, he says:

“I hate people with a big heart. All they do is look down on you from above. They don't give a damn about petty struggles of the people serving under them. If that's what it means to be a king, then that's just sad and pathetic.”
-- Fushimi Saruhiko, Episode 13

It would seem that his experience in the Red Clan had left a bitter taste in his mouth in more ways than one. Fushimi was clearly miserable when Yata began to hang out with the other guys, but the only person could have helped him hadn’t. Suoh Mikoto, as the Red King, only concerns himself with the bigger picture, much like other Kings, and as an underling of said King, he doesn’t feel as if the man had ever tried to make him feel like he’s a part of them. It was always them looking down from above, and the subordinates looking up to them. Yata easily follows that natural order of things, but Fushimi can only look at Yata. So, when he’d left HOMRA, Suoh doesn’t even bat a lash, which had probably made him feel more worthless than before. The only person who was affected had been Yata, but see -- he moved on.

In the end, it’s Fushimi who is “sad and pathetic.”

The following quote is a great reflection of him as a person these days. Bitter, apathetic and miserable:

“Heroes sure are convenient to have around, but no matter how long you wait for them, they’ll never show up in real life. I simply thought I’d use this opportunity to teach that to those stupid kids. In the end, you’ve no choice but to make your way in this world somehow by your own power. Those powerless to help themselves will get weeded out as children.”
-- Fushimi Saruhiko, AGF 2012 Drama CD

Fushimi no longer cares about anything as long as he can fight Yata, and his moving on to SCEPTER4 is his way to cope with loss, but he’s only met with boredom. He knows that joining the Blue Clan meant that he would be able to deal with the thugs and gangsters, and in turn, it’s the only way he can get close to Yata, the only person who can inspire some excitement in his boredom.

In conclusion, Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki Misaki.

Abilities/Powers: In the world of K, each member of clans are given a special power unique to the clan they have joined. They draw their powers from their respective Kings (who, in turn, draw their powers from the Dresden Slate) in the form of auras, and how they obtain such powers vary from King to King. Now it’s quite unclear exactly how different each Kings’ powers are from one another since we only really see four of them throughout the series (as we overseas viewers know now; there are light novels and manga being translated, but the specific details of the powers of the Kings are still shrouded with mystery), it’s believed that some of it is element-based. For example, the Red King and his members possess a powerful fire ability - able to control fire in the form of auras from their hands to the rest of their bodies without being burnt by the flames, but its heat can melt glass and metal or even destroy buildings if the user so chooses to do so.

All that to say that Fushimi’s case is quite... peculiar.

You see, he has not only one Aura, but two - his Red Aura coming from his previous alliance with HOMRA, the name of the Red King’s clan, and with his defection to Scepter 4, the unofficial name of the Blue Clan (its official name is less used, but it is ANNEX4), he now possesses the Blue Aura as well, though what those powers are exactly is, again, quite unknown. When fighting with Yata Misaki, a member of HOMRA and a former comrade, in Episode 5, it does seem that his Aura kind of deflects Yata’s flaming one, which makes the viewer believe that it may correspond with either water or wind. However, new information from DVD leaks has reviewed that the Blue King's power has to do strongly with the order of the universe, therefore he has some sort of ability to fix and reconstruct. Basically to restore order, which is consistent with SCEPTER4's duties as a special police force.

What is also consistent among all Blues is their swordwork. Each member wields a saber and fights primarily with the sword. They seem to require special permission in order to use their swords, using their surnames and then "battou!" (translated into ready). Fushimi perhaps owes his fighting style due to his alliance with the Reds because it is all over the place. He may use the sword as the saber that it is, swinging and cutting; perhaps he might want to take the sword thrust it forward as if he’s holding a rapier; maybe he’ll ignore his sword his sword entirely and use the Blue Aura on his free hand to deflect (which we know now as a restoration type of power; the Reds use their power freely, so the deflection part of it is to restore the order to its use, perhaps?) or, if he’s really in the mood, he’ll pull out his throwing knives, transfer his Red Aura into them and throw them at his target. Not only that, but he’s able to create a protective field with either Aura using a multitude of throwing knives, tossing them in a line while transferring the maximum amount of blue aura upon them seems to be enough to withstand even the Red King’s overwhelming one (that isn’t to say that he’ll be able to fight him; only Kings can fight other Kings. Any clan member who tries would be looking for a death wish). This mixture of styles and aura gives him flexibility, which in turn makes him a formidable and deadly opponent in the battlefield... perhaps it's why he was earned such a high rank within the Blue Clan, as well, even though he'd defected.

So, to summarize: Fushimi possesses both red and blue aura because he was accepted by both Kings at one point, regardless of his defection. His Red Aura is usually coupled with his throwing knives and is elementally-based, giving him the ability control fire. With the combination of the two, he can create a protective force-field that can withstand the most dangerous of auras, though he can do the same with the Blue Aura as well. Fushimi’s Blue Aura, as expected, is usually (but not exclusively) coupled with his saber, but the aura itself seems to be able to extinguish the Red Aura when fighting an opponent on the same level in terms of power.

There’s a sting on his back, but his fingers still find the reminder of his betrayal on his chest, scratching idly as he stares into the emptiness of the room. And there’s a part of him that believed that all previous events -- HOMRA, Scepter 4, Clan wars, the murder of Totsuka Tatara, Yata Misaki daring to abandon him -- was all a horrible dream. But when he closes his eyes, those images flashes right back just like the bad memory that it is, and he immediately remembers the second before he blacked out.

War, Kings fighting, Misaki -- Misaki Misaki Misaki (and his eyes on someone else, as usual).

His eyes open, hand that was on his burnt-out insignia moves to apply pressure on his aching head. Without a clue of what’s going on, he can only assume the worst. The incident that the captain had feared would happen, happened, meaning he wasn’t able to kill the Red King after all... but it still doesn’t add up -- it doesn’t require an analytic mind his his in order figure out that there’s something suspiciously different about all this. Fushimi doesn’t believe in a heaven or hell, so naturally, he doesn’t believe that this is the afterlife. After all, he feels too much unresolved to allow things to end the way they had. He was still fighting Misaki, and just when he finally had his attention --

Fushimi clicks his tongue, rolling out of the bed he woke up in. No, he still feels completely the same as he had before, even down to the emotional level. His adrenaline is only just dying off, leaving behind a tingly feeling at the tips of his fingers and burning at his mark that overshadows even the fleeting sting on his back. But he ignores all that regardless, he needs to go back. No, not even that matters - he wants to find Misaki! It’s a score he needs to settle...

But first, he needs to figure where he is. The dome is unlike any other place he’s seen before, as ridiculous as his Captain can be from time to time, he doesn’t believe that he’s gotten so bored with his job that he decided to start reading and involving himself with the horoscope section of his magazines as well... not that he didn’t have the power to do such a thing; the man did transform a part of his office into a traditional Japanese living room.... bamboos and everything.

He’s the last person Fushimi wants to think about in this crucial moment, and the podium is a great distraction. In fact, there seems to be some items on it... well. That will be his first clues. He doesn’t bother reading them right away as he snipes both the items on the podium, shoving the letter inside his pocket and going straight to the device. Doesn’t even bother checking out the peaceful view of the lake ask he walks out of the dome and follows the path into the city. Frankly, he feels out of place, his mind is in chaos and yet here is this place, chilly, cold, peaceful. He still feels he needs to be out there fighting.

Not because he cares about the state of Japan or the people in it. Because he wants to finish that goddamn fight he’s been waiting for days to complete. Always interrupted, always some bothersome superior sticking their necks into the situation and preventing him from settling the fucking score. Fushimi can look at the letter later, but for now, he fiddles what something he’s more familiar with -- technology. And this is similar to his PDAs enough that he can access the endless information provided, though it seems that it’s only coming from other residents’ accounts. Like a diary, huh... no, a network, he decides. Forum styles that are both video and text-based. Good. He’ll start there... to hell with that useless letter.
